Final Exam Prep

Preparing for the Final Exam

Exam Structure & Format

  • The exam is 2 hours long and must be taken in person.

  • The exam structure remains the same, but the content varies each session. If you retake the exam, it will not be the exact same test.

  • The exam includes:

    • 120 questions in multiple-choice, short answer, and fill-in-the-blank formats (partial credit is possible for some questions).

    • Short essay (criteria for full credit will be outlined).

    • Blind tasting of 2–3 wines.

Study Materials & Resources

  • Lecture Handbook & Class Presentations: These PDFs are downloadable and contain key testable material.

  • Your own Class notes.

  • Class Pre-Records (not downloadable).

  • Tasting Grid: Helps guide your approach to blind tasting, methodically.

  • Weekly Online Quizzes:

    • Not graded and do not affect your final exam score.

    • Content is not all-encompassing but serves as a good self-check.

    • Should be retaken throughout the session to reinforce knowledge.

Study Tips

  • Be consistent: don’t cram at the last minute.

  • Engage with the material regularly: review slides, handbook, and quizzes.

  • Practice blind tasting with classmates or at venues like Corkbuzz and Terroir.

  • Form a study group: learning with peers can be highly effective.

Postponing the Final Exam

Should I Postpone?

The final exam may be postponed once with written permission, within one year of originally scheduled exam date.

  • It is your choice, but we strongly recommend taking the exam at the end of your session while the material is fresh in your mind.

  • The exam is only offered twice a year, meaning you may have a long gap before the next opportunity.

Retake, Passing Criteria & Notification

  • Passing score: 80%

  • Distinguished score: 95%

  • If you fail, the retake fee is $150.

  • How and when will I be notified of my exam results?
We grade exams immediately, and students are notified by phone within 10 days of the final exam date.

  • When will I receive my certificate?
Certificates are issued within approximately two weeks after the exam.

How to Postpone

  • If you choose to postpone, we will email you the registration form one month before the next session’s exam.

  • You will retain limited extended access to the Student Portal (keep your login details handy).

  • Be sure to download the Lecture Handbook and Class Presentations for future reference. They are yours to keep whether or not you postpone taking the exam.

Staying Prepared if You Postpone

  • Continue reviewing Class materials.

  • Continue tasting wines to maintain your skills.

  • Join or maintain student tasting groups: venues like Corkbuzz and Terroir are great for solo or group practice.

How Should I Study?

We often get asked, "How should I study?" While we cannot prescribe a specific study method beyond the materials provided, we recommend:

  • Using the structured resources: Lecture handbook, slides, tasting grid, and quizzes.

  • Practicing regularly rather than cramming.

Applying what you learn in real-world tastings.
